The gradual reveal of great things for young Rahl was so obvious, in light of what Modesitt has been with his heroes in other books, that I was impatient for it to happen already.

Rahl is a well-crafted protagonist with believable reactions to the world around him, and the high level of ordinary detail describing Hamor and Recluce never gets in the way of the story. I have enjoyed the entire Recluce series. The book is nothing spectactular just a fun visit back to Recluse. A nice link to the past and I look forward to new adventures.

Nor are there easy answers to guadd moral questions raised by war. This was an enjoyable read. Then people will act, and what they will do will most likely make matters worse.

It is part of the Recluce Series which I think now stretches over 20 or so books which can seem quite dauntingbut they tend to fall into small arcs rather then one continuous story. He has an Overcommander, Taryl, one friend Drakeyt in the Third Company, hampr insipid girlfriend, Deybri and “the gelding” who never gets hurt; there are thousands of people who get killed! There’s a lot of room left in Hamor for Modesitt to explore, and although he tends to focus most on the personal journey with lots of details about the environment, which I think are fantastic, but which could conceivably bore othersthere were lots of undercurrents about the politics and entire mage-guard organization that I wouldn’t mind seeing more of.

Hakor story repeats themes from other books in the Recluce magf, particularly military themes from the Cyador and White Order stories. The intrigue and maneuverings of the various Hamorian factions leads to action and hamro.

Here we get to see him learn more about his abilities under the tutelage of Taryl, a political and military leader who drags the younger mage into war. While exploring similar themes to mahe of his Recluce books young mage gains a deeper understanding of himself and magic while facing adversity the author provides new insights into his world and system of magic.

That is not to say that I did not enjoy it, but there just seemed to be a little something missing, that very thing jage had made the other books if little better than anything else I had read by Modesitt. With this unresolved I find it very hard to believe in his happily ever after. Another well-written and entertaining novel set in Modesitt’s world of Recluce, this one picks up where Natural Ordermage leaves off, following Rahl as guadd continues to make a life for himself in Hamor. When we last left it was a mash of several competing kingdoms, one of which was founded by the refuges from ancient Cyad.
